Robert Millikan
Robert Andrews Millikan is an American experimental physicist honored with the 1923 Nobel Prize in Physics for measuring the fundamental charge and for his work on the photoelectric effect. Millikan graduated from Oberlin College in 1891 and received a doctorate from Columbia University in 1895. In 1896 he became an assistant at the University of Chicago where he became a full professor in 1910. In 1909, Millikan performed a series of experiments to determine the charge carried by an electron. He began by measuring the motion of charged water droplets in an electric field. The results showed that the charge on the droplets was a multiple of the prime charge, but the experiment wasn't accurate enough to convince. He obtained more accurate results in 1910 with his famous experiment with oil drops in which he replaced water with oil.
