Robert Sinclair Dietz is a scientist with the US Coast Guard Geological Survey. Dietz, born in Westfield, New Jersey, is a marine geologist, geophysicist and oceanographer who conducted pioneering research with Harry Hammond Hess on the propagation of the seabed, published in the early 1960s to 1961. While at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, he observed the nature of the chain connecting the Emperor stretching from the northwestern end of the Hawaiian Islands - Midway chain and speculating during lunch with Robert Fisher in 1953 that something had to bring these old volcanoes north on a conveyor belt. Born and raised in Westfield, New Jersey, Dietz graduated in 1932 from Westfield High School. In later work, he became interested in meteor collisions, was the first to recognize the Sudbury Basin as an ancient collision event, and discovered several other craters. He advocated the use of broken cones as evidence of ancient impact structures.
