Rooted in rap music in New York City, he is widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers of all time. Nas has released 12 studio albums since 1994, 7 of which are certified platinum and poly-platinum in the United States As the son of jazz musician Olu Dara, Jones' musical career began in 1989 when he took on the nickname of "Nasty Nas" and recorded demos for Professor Major. He is a leading artist on Main Source's "Live at the Barbeque", also produced by Large Professor. Nas' debut album, Illmatic, received a standing ovation on release and is widely regarded as one of the best hip hop albums of all time; in 2021, the album was listed in the National Recording Registry of America at the Library of Congress.
