Satoru Iwata is a Japanese businessman, video game programmer, video game designer and producer. He is Nintendo's fourth president and CEO. It was instrumental in expanding the appeal of video games by focusing on new and entertaining games rather than high-end hardware. Born in Sapporo, Japan, Iwata expressed his love for video games from a young age and created his first simple game in high school. He majored in computer science at Tokyo Institute of Technology. In 1980, he joined the game developer's HAL Laboratory while in college. At HAL, he worked as a programmer and worked closely with Nintendo, producing his first commercial game in 1983. The games he contributed include EarthBound and the Kirby series. After a period of depression and near bankruptcy, Iwata became the president of the HAL in 1993 under the insistence of Nintendo's chairman, Hiroshi Yamauchi, and brought about financial stability.
