Spiro Theodore Agnew was the 39th Vice President of the United States, serving from 1969 until his resignation in 1973. He was the Second Vice President and most recently resigned, the other being John C. Calhoun in 1832. Unlike Calhoun, Agnew resigned because of a scandal. Agnew was born in Baltimore to an American mother and a Greek immigrant father. He attended Johns Hopkins University and graduated from the University of Baltimore Law School. He was assistant to US Representative James Devereux before being appointed to the Baltimore County District Appeals Committee in 1957. In 1962, he was elected Executive Director of Baltimore County. In 1966, Agnew was elected governor of Maryland, defeating Democratic rival George P. Mahoney and independent candidate Hyman A. Pressman. At the 1968 Republican National Congress, Richard Nixon asked Agnew to put his name on the nominating list and nominate him as a candidate.
