Now, The Volcano Lover and In America. Sontag has actively written and spoken or visited areas of conflict, including during the Vietnam War and the Siege of Sarajevo. She has written extensively on photography, culture and media, AIDS and disease, human rights and leftist ideology. Her essays and speeches have generated much controversy and she is described as "one of the most influential critics of her generation".
