Tarō Asō is a Japanese politician who has held the position of Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of Japan since 2012. He is the longest serving Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance in Japanese history. Before that, Asō was Prime Minister of Japan for a year from September 2008 to September 2009, concurrently as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of the Interior and Communications. Asō was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1979. He held several ministerial positions before becoming general secretary of the Liberal Democratic Party in 2008, also temporarily occupying this role in 2007. He was then elected president of the PLD in September 2008, becoming Prime Minister in the same month. He led the LDP to its worst election result a year later, marking the second time in post-war Japan that a ruling party lost re-election and stepped down as chairman of the LDP.
