Thomas Nast is an American animator and columnist of German descent often referred to as the "father of American animation". He is a critic of the Democratic Representative "Boss" Tweed and the political apparatus of the Democratic Party Tammany Hall. Among his notable works are the creation of modern versions of Santa Claus and the political elephant emblem for the Republican Party. Contrary to popular belief, Nast did not create Uncle Sam, a Columbia, or a Democratic donkey, although he popularized these symbols with his works. Nast was affiliated with Harper's Weekly magazine from 1859 to 1860 and from 1862 to 1886 .
