Vinko Brešan is a Croatian director who made international fame with three critically acclaimed and award-winning films, each in their own way, breaking some of the taboos of cinema. Croatia in the 1990s. Brešan was born in Zagreb to a mother, writer Jelena Godlar-Brešan, part Jewish, and famous playwright Ivo Brešan. He studied philosophy and comparative literature at the University of Zagreb, as well as film and television management at the University's Academy of Theater Arts. As a student, he received the Oberhausen Beginners Award for his short film Naša burza in 1988. In 1994 and 1995, Brešan received the Oktavijan Prize at the Croatian Film Festival of the Days for Zajednički ručak and Hodnik respectively. His first feature film, Kako je počeo rat na mom otoku, is a humorous miniature interpretation of the Yugoslav Wars that unfolded in the Dalmatian Adriatic.
