William Augustus Wellman is an American director known for crime, adventure and action films, often focusing on the theme of aviation, a particular passion. He has also directed a number of popular satire comedies. Starting his film career as an actor, he has directed more than 80 films, sometimes serving as a producer and consultant concurrently. In 1927, Wellman became the famous director of Wings, which became the first film to win an Oscar for Best Picture at the first Oscars. Under his direction, the 1937 film A Star Is Born won the Oscar for Best Story.
