William Harris Crawford was an American politician and judge in the early 19th century. He served as Secretary of War and Secretary of the Treasury before running for President of the United States in the election of 1824. Born in Virginia, Crawford moved to Georgia at a young age. After studying law, Crawford won election to the Georgia House of Representatives in 1803. He joined the Democratic-Republican Party and US Senator James Jackson. In 1807, the Georgian legislature elected Crawford to the United States Senate. After the death of US Vice President George Clinton, Crawford's pro-Senate presidency made him the first in a line of succession presidents from April 1812 to March 1813. In 1813, US President James Madison appointed Crawford Minister of France. and Crawford held this post for the remainder of the War of 1812. After the war Madison appointed him Secretary of War.
