William Herschel
Frederick William Herschel is an English German astronomer and composer. He regularly collaborates with his sister and astronomer Caroline Lucretia Herschel. Born in the Hanover constituency, William Herschel followed his father in the Hanover military band, before emigrating to England in 1757 at the age of 19. Herschel built his first large telescope in 1774, after which he spent nine years doing sky studies examining double stars. Herschel published the nebula catalog in 1802 and 1820. The resolving power of the Herschel telescope revealed that many of the objects called nebulae in Messier's catalog are actually clusters of stars. On 13 March 1781, while observing, he noticed a new object in the constellation Gemini. This, after several weeks of verification and consultation with other astronomers, was confirmed as a new planet, eventually known as Uranus.
