Yusef Abdul Lateef is an American jazz multi-instrumentalist, composer and figurehead of the Ahmadiyya community in America. Although Lateef's main instruments are the tenor saxophones and the flute, he also plays the oboe and bassoon, both rare in jazz, and also uses non-Western instruments such as the flute, shanai, shofar and the xun., The arghul and the koto. He is known to be creative in mixing jazz with "oriental" music. Peter Keepnews, in his New York Times obituary on Lateef, wrote that the musician "was playing world music before world music made its name." Lateef wrote and published a number of books including two short stories titled A Night in the Garden of Love and Another Avenue, the short story Spheres and Rain Shapes, as well as the autobiography The Gentle Giant, written in partnership. by Herb Boyd.
