Alexander Medawar Garland is an English writer and filmmaker. He rose to prominence as a novelist in the late 1990s with his novel The Beach, which led some critics to call Garland a key voice of Generation X. He subsequently received praise for the screenplays of the films 28 Days Later, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go, and Dredd. He co-wrote the video game Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and was a story supervisor on DmC: Devil May Cry. In 2014, Garland made his directorial debut with Ex Machina, a science fiction-thriller which explores the emergence of artificial general intelligence. Ex Machina, his directorial debut, received an Academy Award for Best Visual Effects. He is a novelist turned screenwriter turned film producer and filmmaker. He also penned the film's screenplay, which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. Annihilation was his follow-up directorial effort, and he had previously written scripts for films such as Never Let Me Go, Dredd, and others.
