She gained international fame for her role in the movie Love Story, for which she was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a movie. In 1972, MacGraw was voted the best female box office-grossing star in the world and was honored at a set-up ceremony at Grauman's Chinese Theater after appearing in just three films. She went on to star in popular action movies The Getaway and Convoy, as well as the romantic sports movie The Player, the comedy Just Tell Me What You Want, and the landmark TV blockbuster The Winds. of War. In 1991, she published an autobiography, Moving Pictures.
