Barry Jenkins is an American director, screenwriter, film producer and member of The Chopstars collective. After making his film debut with the short film My Josephine, he received an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best First Medical Drama for Melancholy. After an eight-year hiatus from feature filmmaking, Jenkins directed and co-wrote an indie television series called LGBT Moonlight, which won numerous awards including the Oscar for Best Picture. Jenkins received an Oscar nomination for Best Director and jointly won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay with Tarell Alvin McCraney. He became the fourth black person to be nominated for Best Director and the second black person to lead the Best Picture Award. He released his third directorial film If Beale Street Could Talk in 2018 to rave reviews and received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for his screenplay.
