Benjamin Banneker is an African-American freelance journalist, surveyor, landowner and farmer with a knowledge of mathematics and natural history. Born in Baltimore County, Maryland, to a free African American woman and former slaves, Banneker had little or no formal education and largely self-education. He is known to have assisted Major Andrew Ellicott in an initial investigation into the establishment of the borders of the District of Columbia, the Federal Capital District of the United States. Banneker's knowledge of astronomy helped him create a series of commercially successful agendas. He corresponded with Thomas Jefferson on subjects of slavery and racial equality, and Jefferson previously drafted the Declaration of Independence of the United States. Ethnic equality and abolitionists cheered and praised Banneker's work.
