William Abb Cannon is a retrograde, tightly-finished American footballer who played professionally in the American Football Confederation and National Football Confederation. He attended Louisiana State University, where he played college football as a full-back, full-back specialist and defensive back for the LSU Tigers. At LSU, Cannon was twice unanimously named the All-American, helping the 1958 LSU team win the National Championship and receiving the Heisman Trophy as the nation's top college player in 1959. His comeback to Ole Miss on Halloween night in 1959 is regarded by fans and sports writers as one of the most famous plays in LSU sporting history. Cannon was selected as the first overall option in the 1960 Draft NFL and as the first round territory option in the 1960 Draft American Rugby Federation, resulting in a contractual dispute that ended in court judgment.
