David Griffiths Dicks, OAM, CitWA, is an Australian sailor. He becomes the youngest person to row nonstop and alone around the world. In February 1996, at the age of 17, he set out from Fremantle, Western Australia, on his family's S&S 34 10m slide called "Seaflight". During his 9-month world tour, he faced many challenges such as repeated upsets, bad weather, malfunctioning equipment and food poisoning. Due to the adoption of a latch to secure his platform near the Falkland Islands, his detour was not considered unaided. He returned safely and peacefully to Fremantle in November 1996 amid a huge fanfare, including a stock parade and handover of "keys" to the City of Perth. In 1999, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal. David held the record for the youngest lap solo for 13 years, from 1996 to 2009. According to some accounts, he still holds the unofficial record for the youngest assisted solo laper.
