Donald H. Oliver, is a Canadian lawyer, developer and politician. Appointed by Prime Minister Brian Mulroney, Oliver served in the Canadian Senate from 1990 to 2013. He was the first African-Canadian to sit in the Senate and the second African-Canadian to be appointed to the House of Representatives. As a lawyer and real estate developer, Oliver is a member of the black minority in Nova Scotia. He was partly a descendant of African-American slave refugees who were resettled in Canada by the British from the United States after the War of 1812. But his maternal grandfather, William A. White, emigrated independence in 1900 from Baltimore, Maryland. Oliver is the grandson of Canadian opera singer Portia White, politician Bill White and labor activist Jack White, and cousin of political strategist Sheila White.
