Dame Edith Mary Evans, is an English actress. She is known for her stage work, but also appeared in films early and late in her career. From 1964 to 1968, she was nominated for three Oscars. Evans's theatrical career spanned sixty years, during which she played over 100 roles, in classics by Shakespeare, Congreve, Goldsmith, Sheridan and Wilde, and plays by contemporary writers such as Bernard Shaw, Enid Bagnold, Christopher Fry and Noël Coward. She has created roles in two plays by Shaw: Orinthia in The Apple Cart and Epifania in The Millionairess and appeared in UK premieres of two other plays: Heartbreak House and Back to Methuselah. Evans is widely known for portraying arrogant aristocratic women, as in his two most famous roles as Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Serious and The Western Miss in Tom Jones 1963.
