Leroy Eldridge Cleaver is an American political activist and writer who became one of the early leaders of the Black Panther. In 1968, Cleaver wrote Soul on Ice, a collection of essays that, at the time of publication, hailed as "excellent and revealing" by the New York Times Book Review. Cleaver said in Soul on Ice: "If a man like Malcolm X can change and refuse to be racist, if I and other old Muslims can change, if white youth can change for America, there is hope. " Cleaver has become a prominent member of the Black Panthers, holding the positions of Information Minister and Head of International Division of the Panthers, while a fugitive from the US criminal justice system in Cuba and Algeria. He became a fugitive after ambushing Oakland police, in which two policemen were injured. Cleaver was also injured in the clash and Black Panther member Bobby Hutton was killed.
