George David Aiken is an American politician and gardener. A member of the Republican Party, he was Vermont's 64th Governor before serving in the US Senate for 34 years, from 1941 to 1975. At the time of his retirement, he was a member of the Senate for the longest time. As governor, Aiken fought against the new hydropower deal and flood control programs in Vermont. A Senate Republican, he was one of four Republican supporters of the Full Employment Act of 1946. Aiken funded the Food Allowance Bill of 1945, the precursor to the food stamp program. He promoted federal aid to education and sought to establish a minimum wage of 65 cents in 1947. Aiken was an isolationist in 1941 but supported the Truman Doctrine of 1947 and the Marshall Plan 5. 1948. During the 1960s and 1970s, he led a mid lane during the Vietnam War, opposed Lyndon Johnson's escalation and supported Richard Nixon's slow withdrawal.
