Henrietta Leavitt
Henrietta Swan Leavitt is an American astronomer. A graduate of Radcliffe College, she worked at Harvard Observatory as a "computer," tasked with examining images to measure and catalog the brightness of stars. This work allowed him to discover the relationship between luminosity and the cycle of Cepheid variables. Leavitt's discovery provided astronomers with the first "standard candle" to measure distances to distant galaxies. Before Leavitt discovered the cyclic luminosity relationship for Cepheid variables, the only techniques for astronomers to measure distances to a star were based on parallax and triangle. These techniques can only be used to measure distances up to a hundred light years. Leavitt's work has allowed astronomers to measure distances up to about 20 million light years. As a result, our galaxy, the Milky Way, is now known to be about 100,000 light-years in diameter.

About Henrietta Leavitt

Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt was born on July 4, 1868 in Lancaster, Massachusetts, United States (She dies at the age of 53, on December 12, 1921).

Astronomer who assisted in determining the relative brightness of Cepheid variables, which allowed astronomers to calculate star distances. Her study was used after she died to prove that the Milky Way isn't the only galaxy in the visible cosmos.
