Ida Bell Wells-Barnett is an American investigative journalist, educator and one of the early leaders of the civil rights movement. She is one of the founders of the National Association for the Advancement of People of Color. Throughout her life devoted to fighting prejudice and violence, fighting for the equality of African Americans, especially women, Wells is arguably America's most famous black woman. . Born into slavery in Holly Springs, Mississippi, Wells was liberated by the Declaration of Liberation during the American Civil War. At the age of 16, she orphaned her parents and younger brother during the yellow fever epidemic in 1878. She went to work and took care of the rest of the family with the help of her grandmother. Then, along with some of her siblings moving to Memphis, Tennessee, she noticed a higher salary as a teacher. Soon Wells co-owns and writes for the Memphis Free Speech and Headlight newspaper.
