Lawrence George Durrell is an English novelist, poet, playwright and travel writer. He is the brother of the naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell. Born in India to colonial British parents, he was sent to England at the age of 11 to study. He disliked formal education, but began writing poetry at the age of 15. His first book was published in 1935, when he was 23 years old. In March 1935, he and his wife, along with their mother and brothers, moved to the island of Corfu. Durrell spent the following years around the world. His most famous work is The Quartet of Alexandria, published from 1957 to 1960. The most famous novel in this series is the first, Justine. Starting in 1974, Durrell released Le Quintette d'Avignon, using many similar techniques. The first of these novels, Monsieur, or The Prince of Darkness, won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize in 1974. The mid-range novel, Constance, or Lonely Practices, was nominated for the 1982.
