René Descartes was a French-born philosopher, mathematician and scientist who spent most of his working life in the Dutch Republic, initially serving the Dutch US Army through Maurice de Nassau, Prince of Orange and Stadtholder of the American Provinces. One of the most notable intellectual figures of the Dutch Golden Age, Descartes is also widely regarded as one of the founders of modern philosophy. Many elements of Descartes' philosophy were preceded by late Aristotelianism, the revived Stoicism of the 16th century, or older philosophers like Augustine. In his natural philosophy he differed from the schools in two main ways: first, he rejected the division of matter into matter and form; second, he rejected any call for ultimate, divine or natural ends, to explain natural phenomena. In his theology he insisted on the absolute freedom of God's creative action.
