Robert Edward Lee is a General of the Confederate States best known as Commander of the Army of the Southern States during the American Civil War. He led the Northern Virginia Army from 1862 to the beginning of 1865 and built a reputation as a talented tactician. As the son of Revolutionary War Officer Henry "Light-Horse Harry" Lee III, Lee graduated from the US Military Academy senior and was an outstanding military officer and engineer in the United States Army. for 32 years. During this time, he served throughout the United States, prominent during the Mexican-American War, and as director of the US Military Academy. He is also the husband of Mary Anna Custis Lee, the adopted niece of George Washington. When the 1861 Virginia Convention to secede from the Union, Lee chose to follow his state, despite a desire to keep the country intact and the suggestion of a senior commander of the Union.
