Walter Ferguson Smith is a former Scottish football player, manager and director. He was mainly associated with his two spells as coach of Scottish club Rangers. As a defender, Smith's career has spent two stints with Dundee United, briefly apart at Dumbarton. A pelvic injury has made him a manager at Dundee United, working for coach Jim McLean, while also supporting Scotland U21 and U21 teams. Smith was the assistant to Scottish coach Alex Ferguson at the 1986 FIFA World Cup in Mexico, after it was announced that he would move to Rangers as Graeme Souness's assistant. Smith became Rangers manager in 1991, succeeding Souness. He has won 13 major trophies in seven years, including seven in a row. After leaving Rangers at the end of the 1997-1998 season, he was appointed coach of the Premier League club Everton. He led Goodison Park for four seasons before being fired in 2002.
