Wilhelm Maybach was an early German industrialist and engine designer. In the 1890s, he was hailed in France, then the world pole of automobile construction, with the title of “king of design”. Since the end of the 19th century, Wilhelm Maybach and Gottlieb Daimler have developed a lightweight, high-speed internal combustion engine suitable for the use of land, water and air. They fitted the world's first motorcycle, the world's first motorboat and after the death of Daimler, a new car introduced in late 1902, the Mercedes model, was built according to specifications of Emil Jellinek. Maybach becomes the technical director of the Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft but does not get along well with its presidents. As a result, Maybach left the DMG in 1907 to form Maybach-Motorenbau GmbH with his son Karl in 1909; they created the Zeppelin engine. After the Treaty of Versailles was signed in 1919, the company began to manufacture large luxury vehicles, under the brand name "Maybach".
