Maximilian Schell is an Austrian-born Swiss theatrical and film actor who has also written, directed and produced several of his own films. He won the Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1961 American film Judgment at Nuremberg, his second role in Hollywood. Born in Austria, his parents were both involved in the arts and he grew up surrounded by theater and literature. As a child, his family fled to Switzerland in 1938 when Austria was annexed by the Nazis, and they settled in Zurich. After World War II ended, Schell began acting or directing full-time. He appeared in many German films, often anti-war, before moving to Hollywood. Schell topped the list in several films about Nazi period because he can speak both English and German. Among these are two films for which he has received an Oscar nomination: Man in a Glass Pavilion, where he plays a character with two identities, and Julia, where he helps under the German underground. For his portrayal in the 1961 film Judgment at Nuremberg, he earned an Academy Award for Best Actor. He made appearances in Little Odessa and Abraham in 1994.
