She was appointed deputy district attorney in 1992. She joined the Republican Party and ran for district attorney in 1996, for three terms, from 1997 to 2011. After incumbent Gov. In 2011, she was elected as the 31st Governor of New Mexico, making her the state's first female governor and the first female Hispanic governor in US history. In 2013, she was named one of Time magazine's 100 most influential people in the planet.
