Hugh Lawson White was a prominent American politician during the first third of the 19th century. After holding a number of positions, particularly in the Tennessee state legislature and judiciary since 1801, as a judge of the Supreme Court of Tennessee, he was chosen to succeed presidential candidate Andrew Jackson for the United States Senate. in 1825 and to become a member of the New Democratic Party, supporting the major books of Jackson and his future presidential administration. However, he left the Democrats in 1836 and was the Whig presidential candidate that year. An enthusiastic stern builder and lifelong advocate of state interests, White was one of President Jackson's most trusted allies in Congress in the late 1820s and early 1830s. White fought against the National Bank, tariffs and the use of federal funds for internal improvement, and spearheaded the Senate's effort to pass the India Withdrawal Act of 1830 .

Andrew Jackson's political successor as Senator of Tennessee, which he held from 1825 to 1840. He was a key figure in the passage of the Indian Removal Act of 1830 in the Senate.
