William Wilberforce is an English politician, philanthropist and leader of the movement to end the slave trade. A native of Kingston in Hull, Yorkshire, he began his political career in 1780, eventually becoming an Independent Congressman of Yorkshire. In 1785, he became a Protestant Christian, which brought about major changes in his way of life and a constant interest in reform. In 1787, he came into contact with Thomas Clarkson and a group of anti-slavery activists, including Granville Sharp, Hannah More and Charles Middleton. They persuaded Wilberforce to accept the cause of the abolition, and he quickly became one of Britain's leading abolitionists. He led the parliamentary campaign against the slave trade in England for twenty years until the enactment of the Slave Trafficking Act of 1807. Wilberforce was convinced of the importance of religion, morality and education.

Member of the British Parliament from 1784 to 1812 who was a strong abolitionist. He was also an outspoken opponent of animal cruelty.
