Alison Wheeler is an English singer, best known as the singer of The Beautiful South from 2003 until she disbanded in 2007. Wheeler's musical career began at university in a cover band called Melt City, with Hal Ritson, now The Young Punx, Kev Dowd, now by Lowbrow, James Woods, now by Jam Sandwich and Dom Wilhelm ,. When she arrived in London, she joined the independent group Junk, then changed her name to Treehouse, famous on the Camden & Islington performance route. In 1998, Wheeler auditioned for a "girl band" Virginia, led by record producer Ian Shaw and then by Louise Miller and Lee Winnick, then soon replaced by Laura Matthews. Virginia has been a guest on the BBC on several occasions, including Janice Long, Jonathan Ross, Gyles Brandreth, Nicky Campbell and Ned Sherrin, as well as appearances on Northern Ireland television on the Benny Hill Show. The songs from Virginia's debut album Firstbite entered the US Billboard charts.
