Anaïs Mitchell is an American singer-songwriter, songwriter, and playwright. Mitchell has released seven albums, including Hadestown, Young Man in America and Child Ballad. She developed her Hadestown album into a musical, debuting in the US at the New York Theater Conference in the summer of 2016, and debuting in Canada at the Castle Theater in Edmonton the following year. The show premiered at the London National Theater in November 2018 and then premiered on Broadway on April 17, 2019 at the Walter Kerr Theater. The production of Hadestown on Broadway won eight Tony Awards in 2019, including a Tony for Best Musical. Mitchell received the Tony Award for Best Original Song; she is also nominated for the best musical book. The Broadway cast's album won the Grammy Award for Best Musical Album of 2020. Mitchell's debut book, Working on a Song: The Lyrics of Hadestown, was released by Plume Books on May 6, 2020.
