Bert Trautmann
Bernhard Carl "Bert" Trautmann EK OBE is a German professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper for Manchester City between 1949 and 1964. In August 1933 he joined Jungvolk, the Hitler Youth team. Trautmann joined the German Air Force at the start of World War II, and then served as a parachutist. He was the first to serve in occupied Poland. He fought on the Eastern Front for three years, winning five medals, including an Iron Cross. Later during the war he was transferred to the Western Front, where he was captured by the British at the end of the war. As a volunteer soldier, he was classified as a "C" prisoner by the authorities, meaning he was considered a Nazi. One of the original 90 regiments of 1,000 to survive the war, he was transferred to the POW camp in Ashton-in-Makerfield, Lancashire.
