Daniel Robert Graham is an American politician and author, was 38th Governor of Florida from 1979 to 1987 and United States Senator from Florida from 1987 to 2005. He is a member of the Democratic Party. Born in Coral Gables, Florida, Graham won his election to the Florida legislature after graduating from Harvard Law School. After serving in both houses of the Florida Legislature, Graham won the Florida government election in 1978 and was re-elected in 1982. In the 1986 Senate election, Graham took over and defeated the Republican Senator incumbent Paula Hawkins. He helped form the Democratic Leadership Council and eventually became chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Graham ran for the Democratic presidency in 2004, but gave up before the first primary election. He refused to be re-elected in 2004 and retired in the Senate.
