Donald David Guard is an American folk singer, songwriter, songwriter, and recording artist. Along with Nick Reynolds and Bob Shane, he is one of the founding members of the Kingston Trio. Guard was born in San Francisco and attended Punahou School in Honolulu, then the Hawaiian territory of the United States, before becoming a state. After completing his senior year in 1952 at Menlo School, a private preparatory school in Menlo Park, California, he entered nearby Stanford University, where he received a degree in economics in 1957. While in college at Stanford, Guard started a pickup group with Reynolds and Shane. Guard calls his team the Dave Guard and the Calypsonians, with their weavers-style sound mostly consisting of two guitars, a banjo, and exuberant vocals. Guard kept the group together after Reynolds and Shane left, renaming the Calypsonians to The Kingston Quartet.
