Elmer Austin Benson is an American lawyer and politician from Minnesota. In 1935, Benson was appointed to the US Senate following the death of Thomas Schall. He was Minnesota's 24th governor, beating Republican Martin Nelson in a landslide during the 1936 Minnesota governor election. He lost his position of governor two years later to Republican Harold Stassen in the 1938 gubernatorial election
