Harold Macmillan
Maurice Harold Macmillan, First Count of Stockton, was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom and leader of the Conservative Party from 1957 to 1963. Carved as "Supermac", he is known for his pragmatic, humorous good and not obedient. Macmillan was seriously injured as an infantry officer during World War I. He endured pain and partial immobility for the rest of his life. After the war, he went into his family book publishing business, then joined Congress in the 1924 general election. Losing his seat in 1929, he regained his seat in 1931, shortly after denouncing the high unemployment rate at Stockton-on-Tees. He opposed the conservative government's easing of Germany. He ascended to high office during World War II as a patron of Prime Minister Winston Churchill. During the 1950s, Macmillan was Minister of Foreign Affairs and the Competition Premier under Anthony Eden.
