Matthew Reed is a former American football player. He has played professionally as a midfielder in the World Football Federation and the Canadian Football Federation. A Grambling State University graduate, Reed was a Buffalo Bills tenth round player in the 1973 NFL Draft but did not play in the tournament. Reed started his professional career with the Birmingham American of the WFL. In 1974, he assisted George Mira, completing 77 of 188 passes with a length of 1,345 yards, 11 touches and 12 interceptions. He was part of their championship team. In 1975 he became the starter for the newly renamed Birmingham Vulcans, but had a bad year, completing just 38.9% of his 208 passes, 1,252 yards long and just 4. touches the ball and 11 steals. He has 347 yards and six touchdowns. In the brief history of the WFL, Reed became the 10th best player in the tournament. Reed then played three years in the CFL, all in the reserve midfield.
