Maynard Holbrook Jackson Jr is an American politician and lawyer from Georgia. As a member of the Democratic Party, he was elected in 1973 at the age of 35 as the first black mayor of Atlanta, Georgia and all major cities in the South. He served three terms, making him Atlanta's second longest serving mayor, after six as Mayor William B. Hartsfield. He is also known for public works projects, primarily the new Maynard H. Jackson International Terminal at Atlanta Airport, and for significantly increased involvement of minority businesses in the city. After his death, William B. Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport was renamed Hartsfield - Atlanta Jackson International Airport in honor of his service to the airport, to the city and to expanding residents.
