Sir Michael Anthony Eardley Dummett is an English scholar described as "one of the most important British philosophers of the last century and a leading activist for tolerance and equality between races". Until 1992, he was Wykeham Professor of Logic at the University of Oxford. He wrote a history of analytical philosophy, especially as Frege's interpreter, and made particular early contributions in philosophy of mathematics, logic, linguistics and metaphysics. He is known for his work on facts and their meanings and their implications in debates between realism and counterrealism, a term that he has helped to popularize. He designed the Quota Borda proportional voting system, based on the number of Borda. In mathematical logic he developed an intermediate logic, which was studied by Kurt Gödel: Gödel - Dummett logic.
