Prithviraj Chavan is an Indian politician who was the 17th Prime Minister of Maharashtra, a state in western India. Chavan graduated in Mechanical Engineering from the Birla Institute of Science and Technology, Pilani and the University of California, Berkeley. He spent time working in aircraft equipment and designing recorders for anti-submarine warfare in the United States before returning to India and becoming a businessman in 1974. Mentioned by the media as a technologist with a clear and unchallenged image of a low level leader. Chavan has served as Minister of Foreign Affairs in the Prime Minister's Office in the Department of Congressional Affairs and in the Department of Human Resources, Public Complaints and Pensions. Chavan is also secretary general of the All India Congress Committee, in charge of several states, including Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Haryana, Gujarat, Tripura and Arunachal Pradesh. Chavan was drawn into politics after meeting Rajiv Gandhi.
