Sarah Grimke
Sarah Moore Grimké is an American abolitionist, widely regarded as the mother of the women's electoral movement. Born and raised in South Carolina to a wealthy and famous family of plantation owners, she moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the 1820s and became a Quaker, along with her sister Angelina. The sisters began talking about abolitionist discourses, joining the tradition of women who have spoken publicly on political issues since colonial times, including Susanna Wright, Hannah Griffitts, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Anna Dickinson. They spoke directly about their understanding of slavery, called for its abolition, and also became women's rights activists.
