Shepard is an American business and academic journalist, former editor of BusinessWeek magazine and founding dean of CUNY Graduate School of Journalism Born and raised in New York City, Shepard attended the Bronx High School of Science. He received his undergraduate degree from City College in New York and an MA from Columbia University. He married Newsweek editor-in-chief Lynn Povich on September 16, 1979, in a ceremony presided over by Rabbi Balfour Brickner. They have two grown children. Shepard was editor-in-chief at Newsweek and editor-in-chief of Seventh Magazine. Shepard founded and directed the Knight-Bagehot Fellowship in Economic and Business Journalism at the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University from 1971 to 1976 and was an adjunct faculty professor at the university.
