Alan Kotok is an American computer scientist known for his work at the Digital Equipment Corporation and the World Wide Web Consortium. Steven Levy, in his book Hackers: Heroes of the Computer Revolution, describes Kotok and his classmates at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as the first real hackers. Kotok was a kid who dropped out of school two years early before going to college. At MIT, he became a member of the Tech Model Railroad Club, and after signing up for the MIT freshman programming course, he helped develop some of the first computer software, including both digital audio programming and what is sometimes referred to as the first video game. Together with teacher John McCarthy and other classmates, he was part of the team that wrote the Kotok-McCarthy program to participate in the first computer game of chess. After leaving MIT, Kotok joined computer maker Digital Equipment Corporation, where he has worked for more than 30 years.
