Alan Wilson Watts is an English philosopher, writer and orator best known for his interpretation and dissemination of Buddhism, Taoism and Hinduism to Western audiences. Born in Chislehurst, England, he moved to the United States in 1938 and began his Zen training in New York City. He received a master's degree in divinity from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary and became Bishop of Priest in 1945. He left the ministry in 1950 and moved to California, where he joined the faculty of the American Asian Academy. Watts earned a lot of followers while working as a volunteer programmer at the KPFA radio station in Berkeley. He has written more than 25 books and articles on religion and philosophy, introducing the emerging anti-cultural hippie in The Way of Zen, one of the first bestsellers on Buddhism. In Eastern and Western Psychotherapy, he argued that Buddhism could be considered a form of psychotherapy.
