Alexander Mackendrick is a Scottish American teacher and film director. He was born in Boston, Massachusetts and later moved to Scotland. He began making TV commercials before moving into post-production editing and filmmaking, most notably for Ealing Studios, where his films include Whiskey Galore!, The Man in the White Suit, and The Ladykillers. . After his first American film Sweet Smell of Success, his career as a director faltered and he became principal of CalArts Film / Video School in California. He is the cousin of Scottish writer Roger MacDougall.
